It's been three years now 
Yet we've traveled thousands of miles along this road together 
We're two travelers on one path 
Not even the journey through cancer could separate us 

I open it, 

Relishing the new-book scent, 

Hoping 

I can forget again. 

Take me away 

To foreign lands 

Where peace can be found 

I’m a star

I’ll travel millions of miles

Just to see you

Just to give you a little light

A little hope in this hopeless world

One day

I’ll be an asteroid

And I’ll fall from the sky

She is a firebird

Rising from the ashes

Picking herself up in the darkness

Holding hope in her talons

She is glass

Stable and transparent

Never hiding her intentions

Never shattering

You left long ago

Yet your words still linger

Like a gaping wound

That never heals

Will I ever learn

To expunge the toxins in my veins

That you erected in my heart?

     This six-part collection of poetry tells a story based on two characters in the book series I'm writing. One dies, and each poem describes one of the five stages of grief the other encounters.
