Metamorphosis

The caterpillar walked to the edge of the leaf

Fall  was coming, the skies were turning grey

He was scared of  the change, Didn’t know if it would be brief

All his friends and peers had changed, and didn’t stay

The sun shone dimly on the troubled caterpillar

He was ready to change, but was too worried

He liked the way he was now, he wanted to get fuller

But if he didn’t change, the cold would catch him on the milkweed

And so he made a decision to welcome the change

Not just to survive, but to also meet his friends

He wrapped himself in silk, a cocoon strange

And stayed there until three weeks' end.

By the time fall began, the cocoon shook and broke

The caterpillar was long gone, now a butterfly with wings of orange and gold

The majestic insect, now untroubled, flew away south to join its kinfolk

Reflecting on his new, better self, far away from the frigid cold

The old clothes you grew too big for

The leftovers you didn’t want to eat

The phone that was too cracked, too worn

The cups you just couldn’t bother to properly treat
