Lion

Your fur the color of orange cream intertwined with gold,

your radiant mane tinged with saffron billowing in the wind,

you are the mighty king of the savanna,

you are

prideful, regal, elegant.

Your lean and masculine body like sandpaper could kill,

your clamorous roar sickening the crowd,

you are the menacing king of the savanna,

you are

treacherous, savage, threatening.

You are the conqueror of the plains,

yet the criminal of the prairie,

you are the hero and the villain to every story.

You are the lion.

flowing down my cheeks and onto my lap where they melt and disappear

    even my tears have lost.

nine questions scribbled into a diary late at night

    because Saturn had cracked into two;

I’m sorry that I slipped salt into your sugar,

yet your sugar was bitter, I cried too.

I’m sorry that you never learned to care,

hot, spice-soaked coffee drizzled with a splash of cinnamon

coated with half-melted whipped cream, nestled by the delicate fire,
