Homeschool Chapter Two

Blair was only just sitting down when the doorbell rang again. She just rolled her eyes as her brother went to open the door. She turned to her friends, helping them set up for the day.
“Hey, bros!” she heard her brother say as he opened the door. Suddenly, Ren sat up.
“Want to go to your room to work?” she asked, already making her way to the other room. The others followed suit, Holly and Elyse grabbing their stuff. They moved into Blair’s room, which she had spent quite a while cleaning due to the mess she had made in the past week.
Her bed was tucked into the far corner of the room, with the bicycle sheets she had had since kindergarten still hidden underneath the covers. Beside was a bedside table, topped with a clock and a little notebook. Aside from that was a desk and a bulletin board, which Blair had fixed up not that long ago. It ended in tears.
Everytime she looked at the photos, she felt like crying. No matter how long it would be, she was sure she couldn’t wish away the pain that had come when…
“You ok, Blair?” Holly said softly, placing a hand on her friends shoulder. Blair took a deep breath, gave an unconvincing nod, and helped Elyse and Holly set up. Ren leaning against the now-locked door, listening to the boys as they set up again. Their voices carried a little, and Blair could hear their voices saying stuff such as “Bruh moment.” and “Dude!”. She scoffed when she heard them all laughing at something. They were really loud.
“Ren, c’mon, sit down,” Elyse said, patting the spot beside her. Ren gave an overdramatic sight and plopped down beside her.
“Hey, Blair?” said Holly, talking a little bit louder. “Can I ask you a… personal question?”
    “Shoot.”
“Are you still sad about your mom’s death?”
She was falling, falling into Holly’s last three words. Your mom’s death. Everything was gone, it was just the last moment she was with her…
“Blair. Blair. Are you ok?” Holly was holding her up. “I’m sorry. I didn’t think that… well…”
“S’alright.” Blair sat back up and leaned over the math they were supposed to be doing. “I knew she was going to pass on when she was diagnosed with corona. She was sick, and there wasn’t a cure.” She stared at the math again. “What’s two plus three again?”
They all laughed, and the tension broke. They were no interruptions until Blair’s bedroom door opened a few hours later.
“Yo, sis, it’s lunch time. Your the cooking nerd, and we want food,” Axel said, poking his head into the room. This earned him a 2 ½ pencil soaring into his hair. He pulled his head back into the hallway.
“Oh yeah, it is lunch!” said Ren excitedly, standing up quickly and causing Holly to fall onto her back. Ren pulled her to her feet.
Blair stood up and went into the hallway. Five boys were crowded around the island (small counter in the center of kitchen.) and were having a heated discussion wether they should have pizza or nachos. Blair shook her head. Weird.

  • Thoughts after the fair

I’ve never enjoyed the feeling of being sick to your stomach on a fair ride. Maybe I just don’t have the iron-willed intestines that all of my friends seem to have, because I get sick from going on the teacups at a normal speed.

  • october, my love

    october,
    my love,
it is good to see you once again.

although it appears i have missed
    your grand entrance,
    while i left the room.

i walked along the street to visit you,
    and looked up,
  • scratches

    skin pulled taut and tight
    burning like the light
    that seeps through cracks
    underneath the door

    from stray branches and walking
    throughout the woods, balking
    at the idea
    of no path

    water rests on skin
