Am I young?

Well yes, I am still young

You can call me a kid, but I will never again be

The toddler I was, smiling at joyous things

That I no longer enjoy now that I'm older,

And I like older kid things.

Well yes, I am still young

Of course, all kids yearn to be older, to be adults

To have freedom, to be independent

And yet we then yearn to go back to who we were

When the numbers labeled us 'children'

And the world was brighter and we saw rainbows

That are now simply greys, if they come out at all

Through the rain

Well yes, I am still young

But I am not young like I dream to be

Well yes, I do worry about if one day I will not notice

The change from night to day

As the smoke covers the sun

Well yes, I do worry about if one day I will hear

Of a lost friend from California

Shaken to heaven when the dry earth cracked beneath

Steady feet

Well yes, I do worry about if one day

The water will take us, take who we knew

Well yes, I am still young

And you can label me a 'child'

But it will not keep my

Steady feet anchored.
