years

My first year here
in a small town in New Hampshire
on the border of
a small town in Vermont
was strange
First of all,
covid was
raging
around the world.
We were in person all year
we were lucky
but we were still affected.
Wearing masks,
eating lunch behind shields,
in constant fear of infection.
I had just moved
from a big place,
a different place,
and barely knew anyone.
Thankfully,
some friends found me,
I'm not quite sure how,
but we began to hang out during recess
and
we were a group.
That was my first year.

My second year
 was a bit different.
Covid was still alive and well,
but masks were optional
in school.
I was in middle school--
classes, electives,
so much change i can't write it all here
I wasn't with the same group
anymore.
We didn't break up
exactly
And we're still friends
We just grew apart
We're not best friends anymore.
But I have new friends
and I realized who I was
so all in all
it was a good year.

Next year
I don't know what will happen.
A different school
will leak into ours
Our grade will nearly double
in size.
It'll be strange,
seeing the groups change
when new people come.
I am
excited
but scared.
I will also be
choosing electives
being part of theatre performing
which I love to do
so I think
it will be a good year.
Maybe
the
best year.
I don't know yet,
but
maybe
that's okay.
