This is Us

We came together
Some of us knew each other,
Others new,
Drifting together,
Not sure if we fit.
Weeks of tentative laughter,
Of trying to clobber this thing together,
And still,
I wasn't sure if I belonged.
Today,
We were backstage,
Waiting for the most emotional song to begin.
And you,
An eleventh grader,
Whisper to us,
"It's snowing."
The music starts,
There are ecstacic gasps from us:
The sixth grader,
The seventh grader,
And the eight maybe ninth grader.
We squealed and looked at each other in excitement.
You, the eleventh grader, smile.
"Maybe wait until this song is over to go look."
We waited,
Our breaths held.
And when it was over,
Rushed out,
For only a moment,
To watch the falling snow.
And I realized,
This is us.
We are a
Family.
