it's amazing
how things that once were nothings
can shine so brilliantly in the sky
to be admired simply for existing
it must be lonely up there
to attract such attention
yet remain unnoticed
until the brilliance has long faded away
i wish i could speak with the stars
to tell them their radiance is not for nothing
that their beauty leaves me breathless
as they pierce the darkened sky
i wonder what they would say to me if i spoke with them
if it would bring them comfort to hear my words
i could not tell them that they are becoming invisible
to us here down on earth
their brightness threatened by our own
as we flood the sky with fabricated light
the stars are unable to keep up
and i will not have the heart to tell them so
i am told that ignorance is bliss
so as i look to the clouds
years from now
i will see new light
and i will think of the stars

Aw, I didn't realize the direction this poem was taking at first -- but I'm so glad you bent it this way! Light pollution isn't an issue I see brought up enough, outside of lightning bugs. It'll be a sad day decades from now if we look up at the night sky out in the countryside and can't find the constellations...
