The Sound That No One Believed In

By Sammy Berman

As I lay in my bed, I heard a scratch at my door. I jumped to my feet and scrambled to see who it was. I opened the door and looked straight ahead, but saw no one until I looked down and there he was--Henry, my little sister’s INSANE dog. He was crazy but still kind of shy. I was surprised why he was so urgently scratching at my door.  I then heard a noise; it was definitely coming from him, but it was not something I would expect from a dog. It sounded as if he was trying to tell me something. It sounded as if he was talking! I thought it must have just been my family downstairs, the TV or something, right? I stared into his eyes while I tried to figure out what he was saying.

“Henry?” I said. “What's the matter boy?” Suddenly I heard it again. It was so mumbled I had no idea what he was saying. I figured maybe it was just his stomach because he was hungry, but I swore it was him talking.

I knew my family wouldn't believe me but I figured I would still tell them. As I walked down the stairs, Henry followed me, staying within inches of my feet. I got downstairs and saw my mom sitting on the couch. I figured I would just talk to her first.

“Mom?” I said. “I think we should take Henry to the vet.”

“Why?” Mom asked, concerned.

“I think he is talking!” I blurted out.

Then instantly my mom cracked up. It was as if I had said the funniest thing in the world, which I guess it did sound like. I knew she would never believe me, so I decided to ignore her and move on. I told the rest of my family: Dad, my sister, Grandma, but they didn't believe me either. Once again I asked Henry but still no response. I knew it was impossible but I knew it was also possible I could have just heard something in my head. I decided to ignore it unless it came back. For now, I would keep getting dog snuggles and enjoy my life.
