My poems have been stuffed with rhymes
All week
Since three pm on Saturday
I've matched adjectives with nouns
So the sentences bubble off tongues into throats
I don't think they're as good when I'm rhyming
It's probably prejudice
Against the Shel Silverstein and Dr. Seuss I read as a child
God forbid I'm a successful children's author and not a stuffed up
Stilted academic
So I'm writing this poem to prove to myself
And to whoever's reading
To prove I can write without rhyming
I'm writing this right now
The words don't match as you can tell
I think I'm doing pretty well
