our own spherical snow globe

looking up at the sky,

i can understand

why ancient people thought

the earth was flat

and the sky was a dome

our own personal snow globe

only,

we're trapped in it.

now we know

thanks to satellites

and renaissance ingenuity,

that we are not in a snow globe,

but a ball

rocketing around the sun

tilting and turning and spinning so much

it's a wonder we don't all fall off.

no - scratch that - it's a wonder to be here

it's a wonder to live

it's a wonder to swim in the freezing waters of lake champlain

it's a wonder to think

it's a wonder to peer inside a flower and receive pollen up your nose

it's a wonder to breathe

it's a wonder to smell pine sap and cut grass and hay and snow and

and and and everything else

it's a wonder to see

to see delicate snowflakes and big snorting cows

it's a wonder to live

it's a wonder to love

it's a wonder to be here

on planet earth,

rocketing around the sun,

trapped in our spherical snow globe,

and so

so so

ever so grateful

because it's a wonder to live.

  • airplane delights

Just some little sentences, quick delights, really, jotted down on a tiny reporter's notebook during a flight from Burlington to Raleigh yesterday. Enjoy and remember that the world is full of delight!

  • we are the future.

in the halls, we lean against the bulletin boards

and whisper of the latest news, last night's breaking, articles snagged

in the moments before leaving for school. lots of adults

think we are too young to understand
