One More Lonely Winter, One More Lonely Fall

When I think of my childhood, it is always the fall
Or sometimes it’s winter, and then I recall
The smell of a cold front blowing down the street
The feeling of snow boots pulled onto little feet
Then I think of the icicles, impossibly long
Then I think of the snow forts and of the wind’s icy cold song
And I can taste the warm dinner waiting for me inside
One more fun thing, one more time down the slide
One more bike ride around the neighborhood loop
One more popsicle eaten out on the stoop
One more balloon boat in the kitchen sink
One more cardboard train ticket, no time left to think
One more kiss on the cheek, and then say good bye
One day it’s all gone. No time to mourn or to cry.
And then it’s back to the dorm room, so empty, so still
And the wind outside retains it’s frigid chill
But the only warm dinner is ramen or plain bread
And the only one waiting for me is an extra-long twin bed.
And that’s growing up. That’s it. That’s all.
One more lonely winter, one more lonely fall

Author's note: I recently found out that a school that I loved sold their camp in the Adirondacks, where I have many fond memories. This grief inspired some writing, which I have posted below.

  • Bells

Once, on a fine September Tuesday when the air was bright and clear, every bell in the world rang at once. They didn’t play a song. There was no melody. Just one collective ring.
