Fire. When controlled, it comforts you and makes you feel warm. When uncontrolled, fire can be powerful and unpredictable. At times it can be dangerous and other times, it is the fiery passion within us that drives us to create. It is this passion that has helped The ELM to burn brightly for 22 years and has given students of the Edmunds Middle School community a platform to unleash their imaginations.
This year's theme for The ELM is the four stages of fire: sparks, flames, blazes, and embers.
Sparks are the beginning of the flame, the whisper of an idea.
Flames are the emerging fire. They have a discrete power. They can be restrained, light the way, or hint at something more unwieldy.
Blazes are sheer power and destruction, radiating strength, confidence, and passion.
Last but not least, are the embers, the glowing remnants of a dying fire that encourage moments of contemplation.
In this edition of The ELM, you will find pieces that both challenge and offer hope.
