Walking up the metal staircase
I pause at the landing
I see a smoky vision of curls and eyeshadow
Mirrors and dusty magic
Walking up the wire stairs
The music thumping faintly in my ears
I find my penguin suit
And go
At the landing
I discover the most electric blue lights I have ever seen
I descend a bit clompingly
And must go back for a yellow penguin foot I left
Behind
In my wake
Later
in my beautiful boots
In my hip boots
I walk away from the ovations and clapping and smiles and crowd maze
I walk up the cardboard stairs
For a moment, it seems as if the whole world will collapse in on me
And then I am back
I gather my things for the last time.
