a love letter to the universe

Falling in love
the way
movies say
has never come easily to me.
I do not love people.
I doubt I ever will.
But I love the way my brother laughs
(usually at me)
and the sandwiches my mother packs for lunch
(she's never stopped)
and how my father has never given up
(never do anything less than your best).
I love mountains and red pandas and blueberries,
bookshops and lilies and laughter and the moon,
black holes,
pine trees,
stardust,
bioluminescence,
fairytales,
the sea at midnight
the stars within
and the way the wind feels when the car window rolls down.
I love how life completes itself
(your heart is beating – can you feel it?)
(you were meant to be alive.)
Let others love others.
I am falling for everything else.

    the snake is hungry

    so the snake will eat

and eat it does, chewing, gnawing,

and will you ever notice, little thing,

that it is your own tail

    you are swallowing?

from salt and foam and scales

    steal the hearts of stone

    nacreous shells, dying husks,

    the honey-sweet flesh that once

    clung to its bones

    to die of thirst.

meet me at the end of the world

the space between firestorms and tsunamis

    across the acid oceans

    and here, where the rot

has begun to reclaim the cities at last.
