The little girl at midnight

Once upon a time,

There was a little girl

Barely above the age of 7

Forcing her eyes

To stay open

Awaiting the new year

The little girl

Was excited

She believed

Everything would work out

She kept on staring at the clock

Willing it to change

The little girl

Couldn't wait

For the year to come

She thought that

The new year would bring

Endless joy

She was unaware

Of the inauguration

That would mark the start

Of a presidency

That some fear

The little girl

Doesn't fear

Because she doesn't know

I don't want her to know

But I want her to be

Prepared

I want her to be safe

Once upon a time

There was a little girl

With no idea of the future
