“Just one more rung,” I gasp, hopelessly looking up at the death trap gaping at me. I work tirelessly and use every muscle in my body. I don’t know how much longer my weak body can hold on.
Life, remarkably, is similar to climbing a ladder. Everything I do, even the simplest things, drains energy. I have to use my entire body, whether it’s my mentality or my legs to move forward. I feel no end. I’ll be stuck on this ladder forever. I’ll stare up at the thousands of rungs above, each painting its own story, each waiting to be reached.
Perhaps, there is a rung that is smooth and easy to grip, or maybe a rung with spikes. Either way, each is an example of how life can seem perfect and awful at the same time. Each rung connects to one ladder. That ladder holds all the answers, only if one dares to climb over the obstacle.
As I make my way up the ladder, there are times the rung I hold breaks, and I have to improvise. Maybe I stand there puzzled, frustrated, and angry, hoping all my problems disappear.
But when has that ever worked?
Instead, I take a risk. One that I may regret from the beginning. One that may feel like I’m sending myself to a bottomless pit of despair.
I step over that rung. I launch myself forward, ready to catch the next rung. Deep inside my brain of worries, I feel a sense of hope and realize I made it. I learned to fight off the mini-monster attacking my confidence, the monster impeding my progress.
I feel worthy, yet there are thousands of rungs still waiting to be climbed. The darkness above swallows the future that lies within those rungs. I know I have to be that light that can shine as I tackle challenges and discover the meaning of life and passion.
We may be climbing these ladders with a hopeless attitude. We may be thinking, “when will this end?” or “who is going to catch me if I fall?” Of course, we all make mistakes, some that are too great, and they knock us down our ladder of life. But, waiting at the bottom of the ladder are the people we cherish the most, ready to break our fall. They help us regain our strength and cheer us on as we eagerly climb to record heights.
Climbing ladders give us new experiences. It may resemble our personal lives too much, but that’s what teaches us to have the mental and physical capabilities to succeed. We may be climbing forever, but along the way, we reshape the future and learn from our past.
