It's Not Surprising

I am honestly not surprised by this. In my city, there are vape and cannabis shops everywhere now. It was not like this when we moved here nine years ago.  Even my middle school restroom smells like vapes sometimes, and it's not only that, vandalism has also been a huge problem in our school. Whether it's inappropriate drawings on the bathroom walls or kids throwing those mini butter sticks you get at lunch on the ceiling. Someone even managed to detach a sink from the wall once!

Our behaviors are also slowly deteriorating. I see people getting used for their snacks all the time, bullying is more common than it was a few years ago, and nowadays people have no shame in asking to copy off test answers or use AI to do their homework or write their essays.

Technology has also been a huge factor, I saw a YouTube short a while ago showing what high school looked like in 2003. There were no phones, no social media, and the only computers were these big desktops. Everyone looked much happier, more smiling, and waving and everyone looked great. Nowadays, If you take a walk through my classroom, you will see kids glued to their devices, rap music blasting from someone's iPhone, and students making TikTok reels in the halls during school hours. We recently did a book read-aloud unit in ELA and we were all given copies to follow along. The majority of my class used the books as a shield to hide their phones and play Brawl Stars in class and only a few got caught!

With all that is going on, I can understand why someone would not be happy. It's like vaping, smoking, vandalism, stealing, social media, technology, cheating, and bullying have taken over society!
