"What were you like as a child?"
Me?
I was a hummingbird
I was jewel tones in afternoon sunlight
I was thread but not yet a needle
I was not happy and I was not sad
I was a hummingbird
A tumbleweed pulled by string behind a wagon
A flat-headed fish stuck to the back of a whale
Coasting on the waves so I am swimming but not stroking
A deep blue, sea green hummingbird
I practiced mutualism with myself
We lived together then
I was me, and me was I too
I did not feast on things like thought or emotion or eclairs
But the barest bit of sugar water
I had no teeth, nor arms or nose
I was a hummingbird
