Ever since I knew there was a word for it, I have thought of stress as something negative. In reality, the reason that we feel it isn’t negative at all. Stress was originally used to help us survive. If we were in a dangerous situation in the wild, our mind uses stress to protect us and help us survive. In modern days, we don’t have these kinds of life or death situations to overcome, so our brain gets confused. If we have an upcoming test or something we are scared of, our minds think that we are in danger. This triggers fight or flight, and can lead to us going into states of hypo or hyper arousal. Hypo arousal leaves us feeling down and even depressed, while hyper arousal can make us feel restless or energetic.
