Dog On Summer’s Evening

The light is old
The warmth in the air is still, but dreamy
Day has gone
But Night is still sleeping
We slip between thoughts of eyes closed and eyes open
As the sand stirs on the beaten pavement.
The porch paint is peeling
And we sit, drowsy
On the old steps
Something moves on the cool lit road
It pads down the gritty path
In deliberate, stepping silence
It’s fur is lit by the retreating sun,
It’s ears twitching as bugs dart around,
But still it leaps
As we watch it disappears
Leaving only soft traces of sand
But the dog has led the way
Into the swooshing secrets
Of Night
