Demon story (Unfinished)

The creature peered out from behind a boulder. Its single red eye glinted in the moonlight. There was nothing but darkness where the other eye should’ve been.

The human girl, dull brown hair whipping in the wind, crouched down, clutching her weapon. It was a silver sword, encrusted with rubies and other gems.

“Where’d you get that sword?” spoke the creature, its voice a low rumble.

The girl straightened up. “I won’t answer you. Come into the light!”

Grumbling, it stepped out from behind its boulder. The girl gasped. She stared, taking in the gray skin, red-brown hair, and pointed ears. It had bright red horns and matching dragon wings.

“What are you!?” she cried, holding her sword in a defensive position. “You… You’re… Are you some sort of demon?”

“Yes,” it growled. “Now tell me where you got that sword!” It lunged at her, reaching for the weapon.

Without thinking, the girl swung the sword at it, leaving a slash across the demon’s face.

“Oh!” she cried. “No, I’m sorry! I-”

The demon did not wait to listen to her. It snarled, turned around and was gone.

Years later, Zolrith still remembered that day. After that, and a few such instances, he stopped talking to mortals. Or anyone, for that matter.

  • winter coming

    winter's coming on fast —
    better chop enough wood.

pluck the last fruits of the harvest —
then say goodnight to the garden,
resting under a blanket of leaves and love.

  • Goodbye Whisper

    In the vet's office.
    My bunny, sedated.
They are coming soon with the second shot.

She had a good life. I hope she finds peace.
I'm going to miss her so much.
I love you, Whisper. I'm sorry.

  • in the "olden times"

Do you think people 100 years ago, in rural Vermont, looked up at the sky, at the milky way, the moon and all the stars? Do you think they marveled at them, and taught their children the constellations?
