The Choice
I stood at the edge of the road thinking of which way I wanted to run home. Should I go the faster way or should I take the long way? I needed to get home soon and because tomorrow was a big day. But if I took the short way I wouldn’t have time to think. And what I needed was time. I needed more time. More time to decide on what to do. What if I made the wrong choice and lost what I wanted most? But could I honestly choose a boy over school? The best school in the entire world? I had wanted to go to Harvard since I was a little kid. It has been my dream school since I first started going to school. I had waited so long for this day.
I looked at the paths and chose the one leading me home faster. I needed to get home and get rest for tomorrow. I was almost sure of what I was going to choose. I walked up the path to my house. I looked at it wondering when I left who is going to take care of it. I looked at the faded navy blue paint on the walls, the palm tree nestled next to the house with the bright white daylilies. The sun was shining behind the house casting a golden glow over the front yard.
I walked inside, made dinner, and went to bed. I woke up the next morning shaking. Today was the day I thought to myself. I got up and showered. I let the water run until it ran out leaving cool water streaming down my back. I got out and made myself some toast. I grabbed my bag and headed out the door. I got into the car and drove to the cafe where Ethan and I were supposed to meet.
I walked in looking around for him, my heart beating so loud it was pounding in my ears. The cafe was small so I found him soon. He was sitting at a small table in the back eating a blueberry scone and drinking coffee like every morning. I walked over and sat down across from him. I took a deep breath and opened my mouth.
“I have to go to college. I can’t stay here and do what you want me to do. I have to live my life and follow my own dreams.” I spoke bravely.
He looked up at me and smiled. It was a soft sad smile like he knew this was going to happen.
“I know. And I want you to know that I will love you no matter what. And I know you need to follow your own dreams and reach your own goals. I just want you to be happy.”
“Thank you so much.” I reached over and hugged him. “I will never forget you.”
He just smiled again. I turned around before I could change my mind. I was sad to leave him but I was happy to be able to do what I have always wanted my entire life.
