The Best Summers

When I was younger

The best part of the

Whole.Entire.Year

Was summertime

My siblings and I

Would wake up early

When the dew on the grass was fresh

And the

Birds were singing

And the

Hazy morning sunlight

Slipped through the fingers of the tall pine trees

And straight through my bedroom window

And onto my face.

My siblings and I

Would scramble into

The backseat of the car

And roll our windows all the way down

Drinking in the freshness

Of the summer morning air.

My siblings and I

Would laugh at the Mad Libs

Argue about the music

And munch on munchkins

Until somebody caught the first waft

Of salt air.

My siblings and I

Would then stick our heads out the window

Desperate to quench the thirst to absorb

The distant sight of the glittering ocean

The smell of fried fish

The sounds of the mid morning traffic.

The first viewing of our favorite beach

Always demanded excited shouts

From my siblings and I

My siblings and I

Would grin as we neared the small white cottage

Partially encircled

By a cobblestone driveway

Nestled cozily

In front of the marsh

We would catch glimpses of the back porch,

Which came with the promise of

Family dinners

Shaking off sand

Putting on sunscreen

Watching fireflies

Eating waffles with our cousins.

The promise of

Summer.

We had the best summers,

My siblings and I.
