To be a writer is to be many things, and before one considers putting pen to paper and writing those first, flurrying words, let me tell you: it is too late. -

I can see you, sitting at the kitchen island
Scrolling through your phone (I didn't even know
That you knew how to scroll) and then tutting to yourself
Like there's a problem. "What's going on?" I ask -

I wonder what aliens see us as, if they
can see us at all;
if they see us as crazy,
because we make war -
The Crow on the Tree
Caw, caw, caw, caw, caw.
The crow has moved places now—
It is in the tree opposite the light post,
And it is still mocking the racers
Which skim the fresh cotton-candy powder
Below its perch in the oak. -
The crow on the lightpost
Caw, caw, caw, caw, caw.
I hear the crow
Sitting on a lightpost
On a mountain trail—
It's mocking the racers
Who skid down ice-coated slivers of ground.
It's a very rude crow. -
Time
They told me time healed all wounds, so
I left my wounds exposed
And tried to sleep them off.
The next morning, they were bleeding
Worse than they had been the day before,
But I figured
That was just a side effect
