My Second Thought at Night
Your hair
dont let your hair
slip off the pillow
and
fall under you matress
Curved
crooked
things are
laying beneath you
and they
will braid your hair
if you let them
so don't taunt them -
My First Thought at Night
The wall
you must face away
from the wall
nothing can
hide in front of the paint
but things
can come
if you leave
your silken pajamas
to defend in the dark
your back has no
eyes
but your face does -
the thing
The thing
in between the
hanging dresses
that bleeds
into the corner
rotting head
a biting line against
the nightlight
letting you
search the darkness
before finding your eyes
and you jerk into -
Something almost here
The leaves have voices now
chafing in the
crisp breath of fall
til their ashes run like blood
on the golden floor
people tell me to
be quiet
and not remind
the leaves
or they may
wither to their -
Lying
There once was an old woman who sold figs and bread
In a town in the mist by the sea
Wearing wool and a cap all the old woman said
"Snacks a shilling for the price of three."
The children would run from their schoolhouse at two -
