Art Prof

  • This website offers resources for learning how to make art. Check out the "Workshops," "Tutorials," and "Fundamentals" tabs.

 

Cooper Hewitt

  • A collection of mostly objects and some prints.

 

Fleming Museum of Art

  • A database of 20,000 works from the museum’s permanent collections including paintings, textiles, and sculptures from around the world.

 

The Glasgow School of Art Student Publications 

  • A database of student-made works from over 100 years. Including zines, newsletters, poetry, and comic books. 

 

The Guggenheim Museum

  • 1,900 selected works from the permanent collection dating from the late 19th century to the present.

 

The MET

  • A large archive of artwork and historical artifacts including sculptures, paintings, photographs, frescoes, armor, musical instruments, and much more. 

 

Middlebury College Museum of Art

  • Large collection of photographs, paintings, and sculptures.

 

MoMA

  • 200,000 works of contemporary and modern art.

 

New York Public Library

  • Scrapbooks, manuscripts, photographs, menus, maps, posters, and so many more interesting things are stored in this archive. 

 

Pitt Rivers Museum

  • Where "objects from Britain's colonial past sit side by side with more recent (and much older) ones." This archive includes paper works, films, photographs, a collection of sounds, and more. 

 

Public Art Archive

  • A resource to browse art in public spaces including in metros, on the sides of buildings, and sculptures. 

 

The Smithsonian

  • This website has a handful of archives of different types including artist’s books, instruments for science, sewing machines, and seeds. 

 

Staatliche Museen zu Berlin

  • Collection of the Berlin State Museums including art from around the world (website is in German but translatable by Google). 

 

Städel Museum

  • Collection of art from 1290-2022. This resource is great if you’re looking for a specific period of art, as it has a timeline search function at the top. 

 

Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum

  • A database of paintings from the 13th to the 20th century. 

 

Urban Archive

  • A database with historic photos from cities around the US. Sorted by location and includes a map. 

 

Victoria and Albert Museum

  • An unusually varied collection of performances, art, and objects including shoes, posters, wedding dresses, and books among many others. 

 

Whitney Museum of American Art

  • Collection of 26,000 artworks from the 20th and 21st centuries.
